Hayate no Gotoku! Ch. 382

It might be convenient not to point out Nagi isn’t the only one in mask who saved Hayate’s life…

Rain is still pouring. Ayumu, Chiharu and Isumi are not likely to return to the cottage before the rain stops, although in Isumi’s case there is worry that she might not be able to find her way back to the cottage. It means that Hayate and Ruka are very alone for a while. As always (?), things look promising here.

To make things look even more promising, as he turns away from Ruka while she is changing, Hayate suddenly realizes that Ruka is a very cute girl. One might wonder just how many girls has Hayate found cute, but in any case he now knows that Ruka is probably more than just an idol.

Why is this worth yelling about?

Ruka is not the only one who got wet. Although we can’t see through Hayate’s wet clothes for his nipples, he is all wet as well. Apparently he hasn’t got spare casual outfits, so he has no choice but to change into his butler uniform again.

Then, Ruka has a question for Hayate: why has he become a butler? To answer that question, Hayate repeats his story (once again): his parents sold him to the Yakuza for 150M yen, and Nagi bailed him out. What is probably new here is that Hayate reveals what makes him the most happy: it is not because his debt was cleared, but that Nagi was the only one who saved him. This gave new hope and purpose to his life, so he became Nagi’s butler.

Hayate has been asking for this from day one.

As she listens, Ruka now knows how similar her story is with Hayate’s. This gives her the empathy to understand the pain Hayate has gone through, and how grateful he is to Nagi. Hayate returns her a “lovely smile”.

Suddenly, Ruka understands how wonderful Hayate is – he could help people with all his might without concerning his own safety – and how deep her love is for him. So she does it: she calls for Hayate’s attention, and as he turns around, she presses her lips on his. And they live happily ever after.

If I do this Chapter Review in the same way I used to do, i.e. outlining the chapter with some personal thoughts, then the above paragraphs would do. However, it would be far too short. As such, why not we discuss this chapter in more depth than usual?

Hinagiku thought the same thing in Ch. 283, but in the end…

A lot of people have already expressed their feelings about this chapter: some are happy, some are unhappy. So what do I feel about this development? Well, I am not happy about this, but not entirely because this is not my desired development – it is relevant, but not the critical issue.

Imagine you are playing the Football Manager game. Your team dominated almost the entire game, but you couldn’t score. You hit the woodwork, were called offside, were fouled… You had a lot of near misses, but you just couldn’t score. Then, at the final minute of the game, your opponents got their only chance of the game, and they duly scored. Now, you won’t like it. You would think that either you were having an extremely bad day, or that the computer cheated.

This is exactly how I feel about this chapter. Let us not forget that this is not the first time Hayate has the chance to develop a romantic relationship with one of the female characters, but most previous cases have been near misses: either a third party would appear (out of nowhere) to ruin the mood, or one of the characters would press the self-destruct button. Yet what Ruka gets in this chapter is not another near miss: no third party, no self-destruction. Without all those nuisance, Ruka makes significant progress with Hayate, and she has a direct hit on target on her first attempt. As the supporter of a character who suffers the most from near misses, I find Ruka’s success rather hard to take.

Same old story retold for the n-th time.

Of course, as the crowning moment of her birthday arc – as well as some moments of other girls – would tell you, when character and plot development is required, Hata is more than happy to grant the girl some success. As Ruka has just got a big success in this chapter, we must wonder what character and plot development can be expected from a Hayate-Ruka kiss.

Remember the little flashback in the previous chapter on Hayate’s monologue? It was Hayate’s thoughts after his “break-up” with Athena, his first love. If you remember, things did not have to turn out so badly, as Athena had, during their reunion, thought that she wanted to be with Hayate forever. Unfortunately, Hayate had chosen that exact moment to talk about Nagi and how important she was (and is) to him. With that, Hayate spectacularly turned a lovely reunion into a “final” farewell.

And then he cried. He did not understand Athena’s decision, but he was sad that she was not coming to Japan with him, so he cried. Obviously, he did not know what he had done wrong, because the next thing we know, he told Hinagiku that Athena had dumped him because “she fell out of love with me”. He did not think he had done anything wrong – it was Athena’s problem for falling out with him.

Feeling content to do an Athena again.

As he never knew that expressing gratitude for Nagi could cause him troubles when finding a lover, he is doing the very same thing to Ruka in this chapter. If he really wants a love life that doesn’t involve Nagi, and if he has learnt anything from his “break-up” with Athena, he would know better than repeating his same old mistake.

Unlike Athena, Ruka pays little attention to the girl Hayate is talking about. She doesn’t want to talk about the girl, as she thinks it is something irrelevant. All she cares is how similar she is to Hayate, and how close she can be to Hayate’s inner feelings. So, while Hayate is stupid enough to express his gratitude for Nagi in front of a girl he just found “cute”, the outcome so far is totally different from last time. While Athena “dumped” Hayate, Ruka kisses him.

Perhaps this is why Hayate’s monologue was mentioned in the previous chapter in the first place. While his previous mistake cost him his first love, the same mistake now grants him a second chance to fall in love with a girl. At the very least, Hayate is given a second chance to rethink his love philosophy, if any.

What kind of emotion is he expressing, you say?

It is no question that Hayate is emotionally attached to Nagi. The real question is whether such an attachment is romantic love – shippers argue for this, sinkers (?) argue against it. By kissing Hayate right after he talked about Nagi’s greatness, Ruka coincidentally (or deliberately?) invites Hayate to separate the concepts of “gratitude” and “love”.

I have always thought that the relationship between Hayate and Nagi could be something like that between Christians and Jesus Christ. Ask any devoted Christian, and they would tell you that Christ is the most important person in their lives. Yet, ask them again and I doubt if any would say they want to marry Christ. The thing is, Christians worship and follow The Son of God, but they fall in love with and marry mortals. In the very same way, while Hayate has full gratitude for Nagi, it doesn’t mean that he cannot fall in love with other girls.

Maybe this is why Athena changed from “not returning to Japan” in Ch. 265 to “returning to Japan” in Ch. 266. Perhaps, after a night’s sleep to help clearing her head, Athena had noticed the “blind spot”: Hayate has gratitude for Nagi, but it doesn’t mean that he loves her. With that in mind, it is understandable that she was ready to fight for Hayate again.

Perhaps time has really come for Hayate to think whether “gratitude” and “love” is the same thing for him. This could be a very important question for him, so I think we should not label Ch. 382 as “just another ship-tease”. Instead, if Hayate really will have an internal debate on whether he could love someone other than Nagi, then this chapter could be of utmost importance.

We all know that this is not really true.

The tricky thing for Ruka is that, even if she successfully convinces that Hayate can fall in love with her, there remains a question whether he will fall in love with her. After all, Athena has returned to Japan (despite in child form with memories and powers lost), and Hayate is known for a long-term crush on Maria. If he really is in love with someone other than Nagi, at least it isn’t necessarily Ruka.

As there will be no chapter in the next issue of Shonen Sunday, we surely will have a long debate over whether Ruka is the one true girl for Hayate. I will offer my views in a separate article next week, but for the time being, let’s vote! (Should clarification of “real deal” be required, it means Ruka becoming Hayate’s true love.)

This might affect the content of the Featured Article coming 31 October…

  1. Wow, I can sense the bitterness from here XP

To be honest, now I can’t concentrate on anything I am doing after I saw this, lol.

  2. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH!!!!!!????

Naze, Nande, WHY!!!?? First she admits to Hinagiku, wholeheartedly, that she loves Hayate (left my jaw open) and now THIS (still in shock after just seeing this)!! Just how friggin assertive is she!!?? She made so much progress in record time when compared to the other girls! Looks like she really took Ayumu’s “advice” about going straight for the level of a kiss seriously. To think, that I thought this arc wouldn’t have anything plot worthy happening, but I was seriously wrong!!

Ruka, I have to admit, has made so much impact in this series, especially after this!

    • Ruka’s determination is frightening, and by the looks of it she has just unsettled the equilibrium between the female characters. Somebody will have to respond to Ruka’s actions sooner or later, and that could be a sight I would say.

  3. So… Am I supposed to be surprised? xD

Don’t worry, sergeant. Hayate went on a “date” with Hina two months later anyway, see? Hata said the manga will catch with the anime… so… There you have it. Another big joykill!
Wait… or… was the date 5 months ago?

I think we have a conundrum here…. Wait!! Great Scott! It’s a time paradox. The result could be chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum and destroy the entire universe!
    Way to go, Hata! 😛

    • Somehow I feel uneasy to use the movie and the new anime as an “escape route” for myself, for I still have difficulty accepting the canonicity of them. In any case we don’t know what is going to happen in the anime as well, so my faith is… not on the anime.

  4. …Still deluding myself into thinking that they are related/distant relatives…
    *kisses*
Hayate: This is all wrong. I don’t know what it is. But when I kiss you, it’s like I’m kissing… my brother.
    Ruka: O.o
    *punches Hayate*

    • Well, in Star Wars Luke and Leia did kiss each other, and in the end nobody has a problem with that. XD

But then the mysteries of Ruka’s past has yet to be resolved, so your theory COULD still be valid.

  5. I was pretty bitter earlier too. But then I realized Hata gave us a blessing in disguise. The movie and the new anime are a flash forward…

…Hayate isn’t dating Ruka in them. Heck she isn’t even around. I have every reason to believe that at best Hayate agrees to go out with her for a bit and it doesn’t work. At worst, it ends badly and Ruka may become something of a jealous antagonist. She seems like she’ll be plot-relevant based on pictures of her with the kings jewels…and what better motivation than a bad break-up?

I’m kinda hoping that they do go out just for a little bit to see the fireworks go off. I wouldn’t mind Hina being away at kendo training camp until the dust settles, but there are just SOOO many possibilities. Maybe Ruka sees Hayate with Hina and gets jealous…possibly justifiably given how flirty Hayate can be with Hina (and Hina’s been able to flirt more like she used to lately too). If we’re really lucky then Hayate might even discover some feelings he didn’t know he had, though probably only at a sub-conscious level for now.

So don’t feel too bad. Hina seemed to be doing just fine in the movie (haven’t seen it yet but that was what I got from it). Ruka hasn’t even been seen anywhere near Hayate in these ‘flash-forwards’ so don’t lose hope! Overall, I feel confident that any relationship Ruka may or may not start with Hayate will only serve as a catalyst for something else (plot and/or another…fan-preferred…romance). If you want to feel better, just go to TV Tropes and look up Romantic False Lead (WARNING: I am not responsible for hours or days of time lost on that site).

    • Again, I am not yet confident to put my bet on Hina doing fine because the movie and the new anime seem to suggest so, but deep down in my heart I surely hope you are right. I already have a theory that Ruka’s actions could lead to Hina’s victory, but I need more proof… especially from the next few chapters. In the worst case I might have to scrap my theory and accept defeat, but let’s see.

TV Tropes huh? I agree that’s extremely addictive. I tend to read them while I am at work, that relieves the boredom while not exactly wastes my time.

  6. Maybe the Kings Jewels has a strong reaction to very negative emotions. If Ruka gets hurt after “that” (knowing Hayate, very likely) then what will occur is…… plot.

    • Even if Hayate is aware that he CAN love other girls while remaining Nagi’s butler (my stand since the very beginning), Yozora might want to make a mess of things. After all, she is planing for… plot.

    • I might be overanalyzing this a bit but I can’t help but notice that Hayate’s t-shirt reads “all good things come to those who wait” perhaps this message is Hata’s way of trolling us or a way of giving us “other shippers” something to look forward to in the future.

    • Yet unlike all those Hayate-Hina moments, there is no one to spoil the moment for Hayate and Ruka, and… things are done!

    • I’d be kinda ticked off if there really were no interferences. Is it truly wise to have a new girl get this far with Hayate or is this simply some kind of message to the other harem girls that this is the kinda thing that’ll happen if you don’t make a move for the past 300+ chapters?

    • Well, of course if Hayate is not “claimed”, someday he would be taken by someone. That is inevitable.

Then again, we do not know how Hayate would react to Ruka, or whether their relationship (if they really go out) will last long. We simply don’t know.

  7. Hm… I wonder how the fans everywhere else are reacting to this. Also, I can tell that many HayaxHina fans are (now?) starting to see Ruka as a potential threat. Well… just thought I’d mention this, I’m not a HayaxHina fan. But still, this a shocker to lots of fans.

    • Of course it is not just Hayate-Hina fans. Think about -Nagi fans, -Maria fans, -Ayumu fans, -Athena fans… etc. The potential “threat” has also come real already, so it is not potential. 😀

  8. It is a shock for almost everyone, then again looking at it on another approach that was fast, too fast that its unshakable that something is really going to happen (factoring in Ruka’s bucket list and her being a potential key to the Royal Garden), in any case looks like 2 weeks to stomach this in with Hata trolling or what not, i guess we are back to the waiting game for now

  9. lol, as I read this chapter a wild story line spawned on my head,
hayate coose ruka, then as a side effect nagi will began to “crumbled down” again. then as hayate feel guilty he try to make up with nagi. But, because the feeling of betrayed nagi run away …

a week after nagi’s runaway, an information about nagi’s death heard by hayate. In despair of feeling guilt hayate run to nagi’s grave. And tell how he love her, but the time never rolled back, in despait hayate choose to end his life on nagi’s greve …

    FIN ..

ahh, i think i’m about to much watching drama genre anime lately …

  10. *Scratchs head*

after sorting my own feelings regarding this again…I just realized that I thought Ruka never did anything significant for or give help to Hayate, don’t you think? If I didn’t miss anything, that is Unlike Nagi (who in return got his loyalty), Athena or even Hinagiku, who have done so much for him yet received little in return, so for now, I vote “no” for Ruka.

    • This is indeed one of the things I would touch on next week. In order not to spoil my own stuff, I shall shut up for now. XD

  11. This could be a very dangerous situation for those supporting other couples. I think Ruka picked quite good timing (after Hayate was supposedly “dumped” by Athena) to do the “pressing.” We all know the familiar scenario in which one was just heartbroken, then another girl comes bringing new love, and that love would blossom. Although Ruka’s timing might not be the best one (to me the best one would be before Athena reappeared in Japan), it has still given her a clear advantage compared to all other girls. The similarities in their backgrounds would also contribute to that.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but it seems in this series, the girls who came later seem to have experienced more events, or were given more “advantageous” backgrounds, which would bring them immediate chances of victory over other girls who appeared before them. Maybe it’s just how Hata made up for their “disadvantage” being the ones who appeared late.

In any case, in this situation, there is a possibility, be it big or small, that Ruka might stand right where Athena used to stand in her own saga (as Hayata’s romance interest). Still considering how the Athena Saga ended, even if Ruka managed to claim “that position,” history might repeat itself.

    • Well if that means Ruka would be sidelined as much as Athena does after her saga, then it would be worrying for her fans.

  12. Well well. Interesting chapter indeed.

I’m not sure what will come out of this, but I can’t imagine any “unlikely” possibility, if you know what I mean. I’m still skeptical.

Of course, a direct and sudden kiss is not something to be ignored… heh 😛

    • It wouldn’t be the first time we do that, though.

Remember the poll about that chapter with Ruka and Ayumu?

    • To be fair, readers have been doing quite well (i.e. guessing quite right) in polls. The Ayumu-Ruka poll is the exception instead of the norm.

  13. Normally, in romantic comedy manga, no matter how secluded the main hero and harem girl are from everyone else something always goes wrong.

IMO, I don’t see anything wrong with Hayate talking so positively about Nagi while in front of other girls. Nagi has become more than just a girl Hayate owes over the course of the series. Even if the girl is cute, if Hayate has no intention of any romance with her, then he shouldn’t be barred from saying what he truly feels, so long as it doesn’t cause intentional pain. That’s why, as negative as I am about Ruka’s “move”, she was right in not letting what Hayate said stop her from expressing her true feelings. However, I am torn between either saying that Ruka was air-headed for not thinking about the effects her kiss would do to Hayate and Nagi’s relationship OR that Ruka is the smartest and bravest girl to do what no other girl in the series could do.

Even if Hayate didn’t talk about Nagi in front of Athena and if she had asked Hayate to become her butler again, I always believed that Hayate would’ve rejected her offer. I don’t know why I think that, but that’s what I feel. Honestly though, I think it’s wrong for readers to think that Hayate talking about the “Nagi Origins” topic is considered taboo to Hayate’s romantic future. It’s no different than saying that Nagi is an evil witch that purposely prevents any romance for Hayate. Now that this situation has happened, it is now in Hayate’s power to choose how thinks will proceed between him and Ruka.

As for this chapter, I like how Ruka determines that Hayate is always putting his life on the line to rescue people (mostly girls) because he himself knows how wonderful it feels to be saved by someone and that he knows how crappy it feels to have no one to save you.

    • It isn’t exactly a taboo, but I guess in most cases girls won’t like Hayate for speaking too highly of another girl. If Hayate can find someone (Ruka, maybe?) who could stand his Nagi talks then everything’s fine.

  14. Hayate is skilled in almost everything. Cooking, cleaning, etc. You name it!
But when it comes to love, he’s then thrown into a loop. He really doesn’t know how loves works… to some extent.

When reading this chapter, everybody already knew what was going to happen. Maybe if Hata hadn’t gave us that spoiler/ship tease, we might have been more shocked.

Does Ruka advance start something within Hayate? As I’ve read what everybody is saying, then couldn’t there be a chance that, maybe, he’ll start looking for a love interest later in the series?

And if Ruka’s advance didn’t change anything, then we’ll be back to same old same old. Who knows? There’s probably even a chance this could-be-serious moment, could turn into a not-so-serious moment. Whatever though. Hata is the author… and we really have no idea what he plans next… or if he even has a plan…

  15. I sense some interesting things (development) will happen between Ruka, Hayate and Hinagiku.

Why? Because they’re currently on the same team, and most probably the three will be together a lot when the Mangaka arc starts in earnest.

Now that would be really something.

Unless Hata-sensei got lazy or whatever that prevents this from coming to pass, I think it’s only natural that it happens.

  16. I do believe I caught a reference to Hina saving Hayate as Silver Red in the Greece Arc. I admit that I’m also waiting for Hina to actually get some well-deserved credit for that (it is weird though that Hayate knows about Shirosakura but hasn’t seemed to piece it together yet…at least on-panel that is). I kind of like that it’s a secret for now though, because reveals like that are really good for climactic moments…say, Hayate eventually realizing how much Hina has been there for him and how much he cares for her. Just a thought.

As for Ruka and her surprise kiss, I can’t help but feel it wasn’t a very smart move (genre-savvy wise anyway). In most stories, especially anime/manga, there are three kinds of hook-ups. First Girl Wins, Last Girl Wins, and Last Confession Wins (there are a few others but those are almost exclusive to last episodes/chapters). Nagi or Maria work for First Girl being in chapter 1 but have received basically no romantic development. Hayate’s crush on Maria hasn’t been seen in over 100 chapters and Nagi hasn’t tried to ‘spice up’ her relationship with Hayate since before Greece (almost 200 chapters now). Athena is a First Girl chronological but doesn’t count as she wasn’t formally introduced until chapter ~165. Ruka is the Last Girl so far, but she just tipped her hand before Hayate was even AWARE of most of his other love interests. At this point, unless Hayate is the one doing the confessing, it’s probably going to come down to Last Confession Wins. That leaves Hinagiku, Athena (maybe, since a confession after a ‘break-up’ is murky territory), and several others that have no next to no relationship development.

Seriously, a sudden kiss is great in a soap opera since they can go out and be together for as long as the writer can milk drama out of it. In a series with a planned ending like this one…not so much. The fact is, there just isn’t anywhere for the Hayate x Ruka relationship to go now except Official Couple or rejection. And that’s assuming they’d hook up and stay that way for the remaining ~40% of the series Hata told us he has left. If Hayate and Ruka are the OTP then that means the romance part of the story is going to end with almost half the series left. Not happening.

I see this leading to other developments, and I’m praying that it means we can get back to the Royal Garden in the near future, but Hayate x Ruka fans shouldn’t get all excited yet. Like others have been saying, Ruka just hasn’t done much, if anything, to help Hayate or earn his affection. There hasn’t been much development between them until now; look at her and Hayate shortly after she was introduced and this chapter. She knows he’s a guy now but that hasn’t really changed much. Now look at Hina and Hayate. Aside from taking a whole arc to admit to herself she liked the guy, the two of them were fairly distant at first. Hina even lamented that she didn’t know him as well as she’d like and they didn’t spend that much time together. And now she’s tutoring him and is his go-to source for help and advice. In fictionland, Hina’s shyness and insecurity is GOLD for building up a romance whereas Ruka’s directness and impulsiveness makes for a very short romance arc with little tension. We have a long ways to go folks, so lets not get ahead of ourselves because of one kiss.

    • Good point, the shy and insecure ones are more likely to get the guy when compared to the direct and impulsive ones (genre-savvy wise). Sadly, the direct and impulsive ones tend to generate negative reactions from readers and fans alike, regardless of whether their a good person or not.

I think the reason for the many negative reactions for Ruka’s surprise kiss is EXACTLY because she barely did anything for Hayate along with Ruka being a late entry to the series. However, the results of the kiss all depends on whether Hayate felt “something” from the kiss or not. Now that I look back, it was still raining heavily and that kind of atmosphere usually hints at something very…. depressing.
