Hayate no Gotoku! Ch. 303

THIS is the correct chapter titile.

It was an ordinary day in the Violet Mansion. We would see just how everybody in the Violet Mansion lives. In this Chapter Review, I would make comments on the lifestyles of the residents individually, instead of going through the flow of the chapter. It might cause you inconvenience, but I think it would be more systematic and interesting.

I am only making comments on the living human beings, so I would not talk about the cats and the ghost. Okay, here we go! (In the order of the time they decided to move in)

Bed Time: 1 hr (4:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m.)
Study Time: 2 hrs (2:00 a.m. – 4:00 a.m.)

Time in Mansion: 13 hrs 20 mins (7:30 p.m. – 8:50 a.m.)
Favourite Personnel: Everyone, except Alice.

Hayate, being the butler of the Mansion, practically worked all day non-stop. He served breakfast for Hina and Chiharu, went to school with Nagi, did his part-time job, prepared breakfast and lunchboxes for everyone, and studied. His schedule was almost completely full, and as such he had only one hour – or even less – to rest. You would realize just how inhuman his job was. Well, you might say that it was him who made his job so inhuman.

Strictly speaking, he did have enough rest, because the last panel suggested that he was full of energy again in the next morning. We might think that Hayate’s schedule was crazy, but his physical abilities were also crazy. If he thought that he had enough sleep, then he had enough sleep. His body could still handle it, after all.

Hina found his service satisfactory.

His performance as a butler was excellent. The tenants, Hina and Chiharu, were well-served, and felt very comfortable in the Mansion. He observed and responded to their needs very well, and even Hina – arguably the most difficult one for him to please in the series – was in extremely good mood. Compared to his complete lack of delicacy as a boy, his professionalism as a butler was spot on.

Bed Time: 6 hrs 30 mins (2:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.)
Study Time: Zero

Time in Mansion: 16 hrs 20 mins (4:30 p.m. – 8:50 a.m.)

It really was late / early.

Although Nagi fell asleep late at night (or early in the morning?), surprisingly she was among the residents who had the longest bed time. This means that she woke up late in the morning. Indeed, Nagi did a Nobita in the morning. She complained that Hayate did not wake her up, moaned that she was late just when she decided to work harder, and skipped breakfast. Surely, most students do have a morning just like Nagi, or Nobita?

I am not entirely sure when school starts at Hakuo, but from Nagi’s words she was either already late or on the verge of being late. No matter what, with Hayate carrying her, the two could reach Hakuo before 9:00 a.m. Not really that bad, huh?

The old TV and the PS3.

Upon returning home from school, Nagi immediately began playing video games. Given that she was a game lover, it was not really surprising, but actually I expected her to devote some time drawing her doujinshi. The next competition was only one month away, so there was not much time left…

Much more livelier.

Nagi became much more livelier when Chiharu returned. After all, this was the only person who would argue but yet play with her. Bickering is not always a bad thing, especially when you are of similar age, with similar interests, and have a strong bond of friendship.

That bond was so strong that these two were okay playing Monster Hunter in the changing room, still not changed into clothes after their bath.

Bed Time: 4 + 2.5 hrs (2:00 a.m. – 6:00 a.m.; 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Study Time: N/A

Time in Mansion: 22 hrs (12:00 noon – 10:00 a.m.)
Favourite Personnel: Hayate.

The sparkling maid.

Maria was the housewife figure of the Violet Mansion. As such, she spent most of the day staying in the Mansion, presumably doing housework – although we never saw her pulling out a vacuum cleaner or a broom. Okay, she prepared dinner…

Just like any other housewife.

As the housewife figure, she lived like a housewife. Compare the scene of Maria having ochazuke and watching soap opera to that of Mother in Atashin’chi, and spot the difference. There was no difference.

Maria was perhaps the only one who had the luxury of an afternoon nap. That effectively “recharged” her for the second half of the day. In this sense Maria’s life might be the healthiest of all the residents. Now I want a nap too…

As Nagi had already fallen asleep when Hayate carried her back to her room, Maria should have no more troubles having good sleeps at night. The maid’s life could only become even healthier.

Bed Time: 5.5 hrs (2:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.)
Study Time: 1.5 hrs (7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)

Time in Mansion: 14 hrs (6:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.)
Favourite Personnel: Nagi.

Come on, you are only 30 minutes later than her.

To a certain extent, Chiharu’s life might be the most “ordinary” among the residents. She woke up at an ordinary time, went to school at an ordinary time, and returned home at an ordinary time. She went to school, studied, did part-time job (Given that she did not return to the Mansion right after school, she might be doing Student Council business or went to Sakuya’s for her maid duty.), played games in the same day. This is arguably the most balanced lifestyle. The only problem is that she might be going to bed a little too late.

Back in Ch. 287 we saw Chiharu making her own breakfast, but in this chapter she relied on Hayate to make her breakfast. She probably had noticed such a change, because she was feeling a bit guilty. The only thing that did not change with her breakfast was probably the style – she still had western breakfast.

She finally gave in.

While Nagi continually begged her to play, Chiharu exerted excellent self-control, by saying that “We’ll play after dinner and after our homework is done” and “I’ll play you once I’m done with my homework and have taken a bath”. Maybe, with Chiharu’s repeated statements of “We do this first then do that”, Nagi would learn that everything in life has a priority.

Good morning, Princess...

Alice did not have enough screen time for us to understand her lifestyle. We know that she really struggles getting up, and she was still not back to full consciousness at 10:00 a.m. Maybe that’s because she really was “out of battery”?

Oh by the way, her room was extremely lovely. However, could anyone tell me where did that bed come from? Anyone…?

As we never saw her leaving the Mansion, we might also assume that Alice stayed at home 24 hours a day. For a child this is quite normal, but then, when Maria was out for shopping, Alice would be left alone at home for 2 hours. Could the Social Welfare Department do something…?

Alice and the big big cat.

Well, there was perhaps no need, for Alice would have Tama and Shiranui as company. Obviously Alice recognized Tama as a tiger. Given that Tama had the “Collar of the Nibelungs” from Isumi, Alice should have thought that Tama was a pet cat instead of a tiger. There could be two explanations. First, Isumi said that the “Collar of the Nibelungs” did not work on very suspicious people, so it might mean that Alice was one of them. Second, we don’t see Tama wearing that collar very clearly, do we…?

We did not see her interacting with Hina or Hayate, who were “supposed to be” her parents. Whether this could be regarded as a family at all is still up to debate.

Bed Time: 6 hrs (11:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.)
Study Time: 3.5 hrs (7:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.)

Time in Mansion: 11 hrs (7:30 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.; 6:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.)
Favourite Personnel: Hayate.

Hina is always energetic.

Although Hina was so reluctant about moving into the Mansion, in this chapter she showed that she has settled down quite well. She did not even have to change her lifestyle because of moving: She kept waking up at 5:00 a.m., going to school early and returning late, and studying for hours.

What might be a surprised discovery is that, Hina was perhaps the only resident who would take bath twice a day. She was definitely a girl who liked to keep herself clean. Yet another piece of evidence that she was pretty feminine.

More importantly, she was happy. Before this chapter, she had been impatient with Hayate, her temper rose very quickly, and we seldom saw her smile. In this chapter, however, she had a much more stable temper, talked with Hayate much more naturally and kindly, and she smiled quite a lot. The contrast in her emotional status over two chapters was huge, but I welcome such a change. Honestly, as a Hina fan, I want her to be happy.

It's so good to see her smile.

Let’s make no mistake. Ch. 303 is no shipping material for Hina. It is true that Hayate treated her more tactfully in this chapter, but he was only performing his duties as butler in a very professional manner. He made pickled honey lemons for her only because it was “part of my job as a butler”. Yes, he was only doing his job.

Yet, it doesn’t mean that Hina would not be grateful. Over the day she thanked him several times, gave compliment to his job, and greeted him kindly. She was happy to live in the Violet Mansion, and for now it is good enough.

There is no time for you, Alice.

Still, we have not yet seen her interacting with her “daughter”, Alice. Given that Hina was out of the Mansion for 13 hours, slept for 6 hours and studied for 3.5 hours, there was very limited time left for anything else. Alice’s plan to regain power might not work nicely, if she required Hina’s presence…

Tomorrow is another day.

Of course, this was only a random day in the Violet Mansion, and everybody’s schedule is open to changes because of the circumstances. Sometimes Hayate doesn’t have to work, and sometimes Hina or Nagi has to work. Above all, the residents would, obviously, spend the days quite differently during weekends.

All in all, it was a very relaxed chapter. Given that we have just bid farewell to the “You and Me” arc and the “Hina and Alice” arc, it would be quite nice to have a short break. Let’s look forward to a fresh new start in the next chapter!
