Hayate no Gotoku! Ch. 302

Hina might not be seeing her own bed again for 3 months...

Happy New Year! Welcome to Year 2011 and Ch. 302 of Hayate no Gotoku!! This is Doughnut Gunso reporting on this blog.

The title of Ch. 302 is “Come to My Place”, somewhat comparable to “Your House” of Ch. 76, in which Hina invited Hayate to her house. This current chapter, in turn, was Hayate’s attempt to invite Hina into living in the Violet Mansion, with Alice the little princess.

So Alice was (said to be) the little princess in training. For her safety it would be better for her to live in the Violet Mansion, in which she could be served and protected by Hayate the combat butler. As she would need to stay with the person she recognized as her “Mama”, Hinagiku would have to live with her. Hina, who found it extremely embarrassing to live with the person she loved, refused and ran away. Alice asked Hayate to go after Hina, and so off he went.

Didn't they looked quite similar on their backs?

Meanwhile, Maria was showing Alice her – or their – room. According to Alice the Violet Mansion was, “just as she was told”, a strong power spot, and if she could live here with the Shirosakura, she could have her powers and the memory of Tennosu Athena back. Several chapters ago, Yozora also told us that the Violet Mansion was a place of a certain secret. Whether this secret has anything to do with Alice, or whether Yozora and the “28th”-whatsoever were linked to Alice or Athena, remains everybody’s guesses.

In any case, Alice’s request remained the same: She wanted Katsura Hinagiku to reside with her in the Violet Mansion.

It's true that he saw her expressions, but...

It became a quest for Hayate to complete, but as he suggested to us in the last page of the previous chapter, he did not know what to do. More precisely, he did not understand why Hina was reluctant to live with them (In fact, Hina was just reluctant to live with him…). In the end, he decided to go for a “direct attack”.

And that meant to convince Hina's family.

On the whole, this was a good idea. One of Hina’s most valid “excuses” would be that her family did not permit such a move, so if she was no longer allowed to use such an “excuse”, possibly she would be more willing to move. If, by any chance, her family could join him to persuade Hina, that would be even better…

As it turned out, Mrs. Katsura, Hina’s foster mother, was very co-operative. Given that Hayate left the Violet Mansion after Hina, but arrived at her house before she did, there was little time for Hayate to convince Mrs. Katsura, and so she might have agreed in an instant.

Wait a minute. Did Hayate tell you that whoever moved into the Violet Mansion would have to pay 40K yen per month as rent, Mrs. Katsura?

K.O.!

Hina was not at all impressed that Hayate went to convince her mother, and that made sense. It was family business, after all, and if anyone was going to ask for Mrs. Katsura’s permission, it should have been Hina, instead of someone outside the family. Besides, Hayate did not try to talk to Hina again before taking actions on his own, and Hina was justifiably feeling offended. As a result, she gave Hayate a punch in the face, in a somewhat Nagi-ish manner.

So, Mrs. Katsura not only permitted Hina to move, she even encouraged Hina to move. Hayate then turned to Hina and asked her to live with them again. Hina replied by a simple “No!”, a very short but in-your-face rejection.

Well, you were asking too much, Hina...

Hayate could not understand it: Your mother permitted it, so there should be no more problem, why not live with us?! What he did not understand was that, even if there was no problem at all, Hina would still be reluctant to move in. Hayate thought it was the external and objective obstacles, but in truth it was her internal and subjective feelings, that stopped her from moving in. He did not understand her feelings, and he did not try to understand her feelings. He only wanted to get his task done. That’s why he failed.

Hina did not answer his question, but told him to think for himself. She demanded him to spend a few more minutes on her mind, and on her feelings. “Think about me! Think about what I am thinking! Try to understand me!”

To her, it would be much better for him to think more about her feelings, instead of wasting his time on her family.

Yet another misunderstanding.

Hayate walked on the streets, wondering what led to his failure. For some reason or for no reason at all, he arrived at Hakuo Academy. There he met Yukiji.

Everybody knows that Hina was sometimes quite mean on Yukiji, but Hayate was none the nicer. He thought that she was a hopeless person, and he let his tongue slip three times in front of her. But then, this person was Hina’s sister, and perhaps he could get some hint towards convincing Hina, so he asked: “I want to know how to convince a girl to live with you.”

Perhaps I went blind all of a sudden, but I never saw the name “Hinagiku-san” in his question. To Yukiji it would sound like he was asking any other girl to live with him – any but her own sister. Hayate might have not named Hina for a reason, but in any case he couldn’t blame Yukiji if she failed to notice that he was talking about her own sister. As a hopeless person, Yukiji was not quite intelligent, was she?

He blushed.

To be fair to her, though, her advice to him made sense. Honestly, if you wanted to ask your girlfriend to live with you, the key was of course to show her your love! And of course it was like proposing to her!

But let’s not forget that Hayate was seeking advice from her about Hina, not his girlfriend. He therefore assumed that her advice worked on Hina, instead of his girlfriend. Without noticing that he might have slightly misunderstood something, he went for Hina again.

Although it involved a slight misunderstanding, it might be interesting to point out that, it was yet another example that a third party had offered Hayate advice on his relationship with Hina. Mrs. Katsura gave him hint on how to repay his gratitude to Hina, by telling him that 3 March was her birthday. Kaoru encouraged Hayate to “go with the flow” and invite Hina to the movie. Aika suggested Hayate to bring Hina to dinner – and she named the restaurant – in Athens. Maria advised Hayate to talk to Hina about what was concerning him. Now Yukiji told him how to invite Hina to move in.

Of course, Kaoru and Yukiji did not know that the girl involved was Hina, and Maria’s “advice” was based on a small misunderstanding and it ended up badly, but it doesn’t change the fact that, the Hayate-Hina relationship had received a lot of helping hands.

Let’s not even talk about the helping hands Hina had received in her relationship with Hayate…

Hina's First Law: "I am shy" + "He isn't bothered" = "He doesn't love me".

Meanwhile, Hina was sitting by the river, thinking. She agreed that it might be okay to live in the Violet Mansion for 3 months, but it was Hayate’s attitude that annoyed her. She thought that if he had any feelings for her, he would have noticed that she was being shy, and would do better than to eagerly ask her to live with him. She even thought, earlier in this chapter, that he should be more cautious with the prospect of her moving in. She came to her conclusion: Hayate did not have any feelings for her.

Perhaps Hina should know that boys and girls think and feel slightly differently. When he eagerly asked her to move in, it did not mean that he had no feelings for her. Still, she was right about his failure to notice her emotions. Rather than being oblivious, I think sometimes Hayate was just being ignorant. He was just not paying attention to Hina’s emotions, and in any relationship, “not paying attention” could be fatal. So, Hina’s conclusion might have been correct in the end: He does not pay attention to me, so how could I even say that he loves me?

Lovely scene.

Then there came Hayate, who was acting on Yukiji’s advice, and “expressed” his feelings for Hina. He asked her to move in to show her smile more to him, because whenever she smiled at him, he would feel very happy. It really sounded like a very lovely and touching proposal, and his words sent Hina’s heart flying, until he let out the “truth” that the “proposal” was actually Yukiji’s idea.

Let me say this once again: Yukiji did not tell you how to convince Hina.

Ooops.

This incident was quite similar to the recent “night in the coffee shop” incident. In both cases Hayate made Hina shy but happy with his words, but then he told her the “inconvenient truth” in an extremely blunt manner. In both cases, therefore, Hayate’s romantic speeches could be regarded as “lies” quite easily – Hina would be ready to come to this conclusion, just to say the least.

But it begs one question: Was Hayate really telling lies or empty words? Could there be any true feelings hidden in those words?

Was there something more behind the so-called mask of a gigolo?

I don’t really think a person could tell lies this easily, especially when Hayate was not exactly a very accomplished liar – he couldn’t even hide his sadness when he served dinner to Hina in Athens, remember? Besides, Yukiji only told him “to get across to her just how important she is to you”. She did not put that lovely speech into Hayate’s mouth, so what Hayate told Hina – that living with her would be fun, that her smile made him happy – could be his honest feelings for Hina, and so it could actually be true.

But then, for a reason unknown, he always ended up telling Hina very clearly that he made up his speech – “Just kidding” and “Katsura-sensei told me”. If these were the “inconvenient truth”, then it follows logically that Hayate did not have romantic feelings for Hina. Indeed, if his lovely speeches were his honest feelings, why would he follow up by saying – or hinting – that these were not true?

So, what is the truth? To be honest, I don’t know.

She was extremely pleased with his words, but it would be quite unwise to believe them.

As Hayate’s feelings for her remained unproven, it might actually be better for Hina to think that he did not have romantic feelings for her. Given that Hayate already made it “clear” that he was only making up his speech in order to convince her, I am rather confident that Hina would not have any wishful thinking, at least until he made another lovely speech to her in the future.

But then, what if this was yet another misunderstanding between them? What if Hayate did have romantic feelings for Hina? Well, it might simply be that it was not only Hina having trouble delivering their feelings to the one they loved, and it was not only Hayate having trouble understanding the feelings of others for them.

It would be very funny if someday we started criticising Hina for her own dumbness.

In terms of luck, Hina was the human manifest of Hayate no Gotoku (Meaning: Just like Hayate.).

In any case, Hayate failed again to convince Hina into living with them. Hina ran away and exclaimed her disbelief that she could have fallen in love with Hayate. She did not expect herself to be heard, but she was heard by Alice.

It was quite amazing that Maria could have let Alice going onto the streets all by herself. She was (supposed to be) a princess, after all, and what was the point of offering protection to her by living in the Mansion, if she could just wander in the streets like nothing would happen? This is unbelievable.

We don’t know how much Alice had witnessed, but she already knew enough: Hina said she loved Hayate. She suggested to tell Hayate right away, but when Hina refused, she said she would agree to keep Hina’s feelings a secret if Hina agreed to live with her.

Hina panicked. If she lived with Alice, Hayate might figure out her feelings. If she did not live with Alice, Alice would tell Hayate her feelings. This might not be blackmailing (I consider this a very strong word, so I prefer not using it at all.), but it surely was a little threat. There was almost no choice at all, so very reluctantly, Hina agreed to move in.

Hello, Haruko!

Chiharu was perhaps the first person to greet Hina in the Violet Mansion, and I must say that Chiharu’s reaction was a bit surprising to me. It was quite clear from Ch. 278 that Chiharu wanted the fact that she was renting room in the Violet Mansion to remain a secret from anyone at school, and that should include Hina. So, I actually expected Chiharu to exclaim in her mind that “Oh, no! Why is Hina here? She would now know that I am also a tenant! What am I going to do?”

But it turned out that Chiharu made no such thought. She did not show the slightest bit of shock, but greeted Hina quite casually. “You’re going to be living here too, Hina?” she asked. This actually implied that Hina already knew Chiharu was a tenant of the Violet Mansion, and Chiharu knew it.

Well, maybe it was simply that, while she wanted her tenancy to remain a secret for most of the school, she did decide to confide in Hina. Hina was her President, after all.

Good... what, morning?

It was night time, and finally Nagi woke up. She saw that some more people were moving in, and we probably would know how she would react in the next chapter.

So, after 3 chapters but 4 weeks, Hina and Alice moved in. Their mother-daughter relationship might be quite fun. I don’t expect Alice to be very respectful to her “Mama”, as she could threaten Hina with her little secret, and in any case she might be too clever for Hina to handle. Indeed, Hina would have a very hard time performing like a real mother.

Not the happiest tenant.

More importantly, Hina would find it even more difficult to hide her face from her love issues. Before this chapter, she could always run back to her own house, or lock herself up in the Student Council Room, if she wanted to escape from her “Hayate-kun problem”. But now, she lived in the same Mansion as Hayate, so no matter how much she wanted to run away from him, she would at least have to return to the Mansion for her meal and bed. Whenever she wanted to return to her own home, we could expect Alice to drag her back into the Mansion, because she would need Hina to stay there for 3 months.

In other words, no matter she liked it or not, it is more likely than not that she would be locked up with Hayate and the others for 3 months – long enough for anything to happen. There would be no more escape routes for Hina, so let’s see what else she could do with Hayate other than beating him up and running away.

You have to wonder whether "these" could be regarded as tenants at all...

The inter-tenants relationship would also be interesting. Hina had a personal relationship with every single resident except Tama, and readers are looking forward to the interaction between Alice and the Sanzen’in trio. It might be surprising, but with the addition of Hina and Alice, the interaction inside the Violet Mansion could be intensified by two folds.

Let’s also not forget that the Violet Mansion was still not fully occupied. New tenants could arrive in any future chapters, and at this moment I think almost everyone could have a chance. So who’s the next tenant? Could it be Ayumu? The SC Rangers? Luca or Yozora?

Let’s look forward to future chapters!

  1. All this sounds oh so true ^_^;

Reminds me of time when Miki forced Hayate to go on a date with Hina… and she really enjoyed herself until Hayate admitted that it wasn’t his own thought, but that he was rather only following instructions.

How dense can you possibly be U_U

    • Sometimes I think Hayate was simply too honest around Hina. Instead of staying with his lie/excuse, he would rather give Hina the inconveninent truth. Well, that helped him “clearing up” some of the ambiguity…

I don’t know. With regard to Hayate-Hina, I don’t really know if honesty is the best policy between them.

  2. Meh…try as I might, I’m just not feeling this arc. If this is really going to last three months, there’s going to be a lot of wheels spinning, too.

Well, it might get better…and after a few more chapters it’ll probably all be background noise, anyways.

    • I think, more likely there would be “plot rotation” between the Mangaka arc and the Alice arc. Hata did suggest some sort of “multi-tasking” would keep going on for a while, didn’t he?

    • Ah… now that Alice has this piece of information as her weapon, it would be too stupid for her not to manipulate Hina with this to do whatever she wanted…

    • What’s exactly evil? A-tan just needs her memories and power back, and there were no better ways to have Shirosakura nearly.
      Blackmail?
      Doh-hoh.
Poor Hina is afraid, that one she loves will be aware of her feelings. That’s, in fact, a bit…retarded. Well, yeah, teenage girl is afraid of love(seriously, what the? Teenage girls aren’t THAT afraid of love. Especially, if we’re speaking about Hina who IS capable of being blunt), but if she’s so foolish about whole situation with Hayate…Well, she deserved blackmailing (:

    • “She just needs to get… back, so…” I don’t care what she needs to get back, but I’m totally AGAINST her action. No matter what the reason is, or how many excuses you may give, taking advantage of others’ feeling to get what you want is just unacceptable. Because she needs her power and memories back, she HAS to threaten Hina-chan, using Hina-chan’s inner feeling? (threaten or blackmail, or whatever you use, is all correct)

The fact that Hina-chan can be blunt in other matters doesn’t not mean she can be blunt in love, too. She is a girl who looks strong on the outside, but she actually has a delicate heart, especially when it comes to love (and thanks to Hayate, it has been shattered quite many times already).

There is nothing wrong with being nervous in love and in fact, normal people are usually like that in front of the ones they love. Being afraid of love and being nervous in front of the one you love are two different matters. Teenage girls are not afraid of love, yes, but that doesn’t mean they are not nervous and not unable to be honest with themselves.

“but if she’s so foolish about whole situation with Hayate…” It’s the opposite, Hina-chan knows exactly what kind of feeling she has for Hayate and she has even admitted it herself (not in front of Hayate, though,) it’s just that she doesn’t have enough courage to confess it, plus there’s the A-tan-related matter to consider… And Hayate himself is totally oblivious of Hina-chan’s feeling (as well as other girls’) and keeps hurting her while wearing an stupidly innocent face. Who is the real idiot here? You be the judge!=_=”

Well, my apologies for getting carried away and losing myself there, I just wanted to state my mind, absolutely not to make it all tense, so no hard feeling, ‘kay? ^_^”

    • I always say that people differ in their philosophy of love, and generally there is no right or wrong about such thing.

It is just that Hina’s way is my cup of tea, while Athena’s way is not. Full stop.

    • >taking advantage of others’ feeling to get what you want is just unacceptable
      *giggle*
But that’s what we all do, especially girls, especially in relationship matters. If there are some ppl with nimbus above head, I’m truly sorry. Well, far from “noble”, but not shameful, just…normal.
Essentialy, when it comes to things we desperately want/need, our inner nobility is usually muted.
      >it’s just she doesn’t have enough courage
And that’s what I meant, when used word “foolish”
In fact, she knows only that Athena has dumped him(well, not a truth, but that’s what she’s aware of!), and still hasn’t made even a single step towards Hayate, hasn’t tried to settle things, well, she acts so to avoid heartache, but she’s whatever hurt, so she’s in fact avoids somethins, that already hit her. That’s foolish.

    • “…that’s what we all do…” *giggle* … might as well leave it at that… *giggle*

And inner nobility or whatever you call it, I don’t think there is a need for such a great term. After all, the matter here can simply be stated as: When the time comes, there are people who let themselves be taken by shamelessness and ones who don’t. And Hina-chan belongs to the latter.^_^

Hina-chan, who is naturally clumsy and bad at dealing with love, has shown some new positive changes after the Athena Saga, especially the event at the café, in which she actively tries to be alone with Hayate (this was mentioned in one of Gunso’s posts). Well, to be honest, those are not so considerably great compared to A-tan’s marvelous and dramatic “background,” which put her in a position outshining all other girls despite all their “efforts” and “performances,” but still to us Hina-chan fans, those little gradual changes are very meaningful.^_^

It can’t be helped if the situations do not stand on our favorite character’s side. It’s not her fault for always being unable to confess her true feeling. It’s not her fault for always getting into ridiculous circumstances resulting in no improvement in her relationship with the one she loves. Rather, blame it on the one who has been forcing her into those situations and making her suffer, even now… as well as the one who is so dumb as to be unable to realize her feeling, which has been written so clearly all over her face, and keep hurting her with his thoughtless words and actions…^_^”

Above all, we are still waiting for a more positive sign… As long as Hina-chan still appears and is herself, the one we love, we will still observe and support her as well as her actions and decisions…;)

Step-by-step, it’s not so bad as one might think…;)

    • ‘lright, I’ve got it =_=

Your fan goggles are way thicker than mine…
      Still, i DO understand you(:

    • Wow awesome! The first time I wrote something and it started a flame war! Ohh wait that’s not something to be proud of.

And when I commented I meant that in a lighthearted manner. It was a reference to the chapter/episode where Hayate was looking for Hina’s birthday present. He was talking about why he couldn’t have a girlfriend at the moment.

    • I suggested that if Hina had to move into the Mansion, there must be an overwhelming reason. Now it seems that the “reason” is way too overwhelming…

The Shirosakura and the Violet Mansion, Hayate’s proposal and the blackmailing. Indeed Hata is making sure that there was no room left for Hina to say “no”.

    • I was downloading the pictures from the forums when your comment arrived. 😛

Indeed Hina was in a bad situation. We can only hope that she could stand up to the challenges.

      We can only hope.

    • Haha, at least I don’t have to worry if the text is fake any more.

Let’s look forward to the full release!

  3. This upcoming chapter will be epic*slash*hilarious*slash*pain ( for hina )

I just hope that her hardwork and pain she’s resisting*slash*experiencing comes to an end and she could finally confess to hayate… I think….
Let’s just hope for her to confess… I think she’ll do it in chapter 400+ hahaha. Just kidding.

    • Ch. 400 huh? Actually that would only be 2 years away. If Hina is gonna confess in 2 years I say I wouldn’t mind to wait. 😉

  4. Thanks for the reference 😀

Once again i see hina’s mother teasing her again haha sure is funny, looking at the situation,it looks like she entered the house to run away and her mother let him come in LOL

  5. HOW DID THIS PASS UNDER MY RADAR FOR SO LONG? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE.

Oh well at least I found it eventually… 6-7 days late.

    • Haha. Well, sometimes we might miss emails, so you might as well check the “Recent Posts” column on the right. 😉

    • I checked that. I check like 5 times a day, or more if im waiting for some.

Kinda how it got to be my now 4th most visited site.

  6. Well, this is interesting. I kinda predicted that blackmail.

Athena does what she wants because she wants to, the opinions of other people hardly matter to her. We saw how she badly she wants stuff she wants (lol) back in the Athena arc, where she was possessed by the spirit of King Midas because of her strong desire to possess the King’s Jewel. Similarly, we have Alice desperately trying to obtain whatever it is she wishes to obtain, it is very possible for her to rather ruthless on her quest for… whatever.
Places little value in emotions (self and others)

On the flipside, Hinagiku is more accomodating to others. When the Student Council Trio doesn’t do their work, Hinagiku goes ‘meh’ and does it for them. You rarely see her outright rejecting someone else’s request. Her own wants tend to get drowned out by the situation and the words of other people. Shirosakura took her into the sky but Hinagiku did not get angry at Izumi/her grandmother (whoever gave her the sword, I can’t recall ATM) because she believed that it was necessary. There are other situations, but I can’t really recall any right now.
Places large value on human emotions (others slightly more than self).

I’m not here to comment on whether Athena’s or Hinagiku’s philosophy is correct. I believe that each of those philosophies are good in their own way and each has its own limitations. Athena may be more isolated but Hina may not be able to achieve as much as Athena.

Hinagiku is more like a teenage girl than Athena ever will be. Prioritises emotions and friendship? Check. Crush? Check. Normal teenage girls would not want her crush to learn of her affection through a source other than herself. It may not be a big thing to most people, but I do believe that a teenage girl would feel that way.

Athena is slightly more cold to human emotions and achievement oriented. She’s the kind of person that is somewhat similar to a “career woman”. It is understandable that someone who cares little about emotions (as compared to people like Hinagiku) would want to “blackmail” someone else this way.

To be honest, I find that her so called “blackmail” isn’t really that large a deal. Hinagiku’s desire to convey her feelings with her own words is just a little bonus. I’m quite certain that she would be really glad so long as Hayate understood her feelings. The need to “confess” is just something that she feels she wants to do, a rather irrational human desire and I do believe that Alice recognises it as such.

I do believe that many Hinagiku fans are attracted to her because of her kindness and her heart. I do believe that this is the strongest point that separates her from Athena.

Just my personal opinions. I personally like Athena more, though. She seems to embody a slightly darker aura (an enigmatic and lonely aura) than Hinagiku, who possesses a much brighter aura. Their clothing reflects that.

Pretty interesting chapter and I do look forward to the next one.

    • It was Ginka, Isumi’s grandmother, who gave Hina the Shirosakura.

And, the grand-daughter, the girl with no sense of direction, was Isumi. Izumi was one of the SC Trio. 😉

    • Until Isumi became my favorite character (reread of them manga), I used to get confused all the time. And Izumi’s hairstyle had me mixed up with Nishizawa, until Nishizawa became my 2nd favorite character.

      Funny how that works.

  7. Usually I’ve come to hate these “Hayate trampling over Hina’s feelings who then gets mad and runs away” chapters, but I have to say that this one was very enjoyable for a change. And it showed an interesting general… well… fundamental “defect” in Hayate’s personality in a most enlightening way.

What Hayate is lacking is the concept of independent wishes and desires. A feeling of an independent self, who has interests of his own. Throughout his life, he was conditioned to submit to the whims and wishes of others: His parents’, then Athena’s, then Nagi’s. It doesn’t bother him, that’s the way he’s been brought up, that’s the way he lived. However, the concept of self, the concept of having desires and wishes of your own, is alien to him.

This is why he is so extremely insensitive at times. He expects orders that he’s able to execute, and he fails when these orders aren’t given, and it would rather be his own task to _discern_ the wishes/intentions/desires of others by himself. He doesn’t know how to do that. So, when Yukiji told him (in general) how to get a girl to move in with you, he rather executed it by the letter, not the spirit – because he doesn’t UNDERSTAND the spirit, he has no concept of it. This part of him has been crippled in the past.

So, if the task is to profess love to a girl and propose to her, he will do it. It’s clear at his last panel when he’s losing consciousness that he doesn’t comprehend what he did, and why he failed. He doesn’t “get” love at all.

That also explains some other observations of the past. Why he thought that after the reunion Athena “dumped” him where it’s plainly obvious that she didn’t. He simply didn’t “get” it at all. But Athena ordered him away, so due to his conditioning he complied. This is also why Athena manages to deal with him much better than Hina or Nagi: She says very explicitly what she wants. In comparison, Nagi and especially Hina fail to do so when it comes to their romantic intentions, so naturally he acts completely clueless. Compare that to situations of danger, when Hina and Hayate cooperate naturally and perfectly (see rescuing Nagi/Ayumu in the temple or the final battle of the Greece arc), because there she’s decisively telling him what to do, too.

Until Hayate develops this concept of “self”, there won’t be genuine eye-level romance in the show. Even in the Greece arc climax, Hayate’s desires were very raw and basic: He wanted to SAVE Athena, and he wanted to APOLOGIZE to her. It also offers a good explanation why he had to ponder so much before he concluded that he probably “loved” her. Real romantic love includes a selfish element, the desire to have the other for oneself, and this selfish aspect is crippled in him. He didn’t “feel” it this way.

As for the rest, I don’t think that Hina caved too easily. She had already generally accepted the idea when she was by herself, before Hayate came and botched things again. So, giving in to Athena’s coercion was pretty understandable in my book.

    • Nice insights! 😉

Chiharu asked Hayate once what his dream/wish was, but to that he gave no answers. I really hope that he could begin to think for his own desires, because in the end he should be with the girl he wanted, instead of the one he was told to be with.

It wasn’t coincidence that Hayate’s first flashback of Hina was her line that he could never be happy if he wasn’t a bit selfish. Those words hit home.

    • Woah.
      You did well…too well.
I don’t think that Hata really tries to make his character crippled, i don’t think that Hayate IS crippled either. It’s…You know…He has no clue about anything, and that’s all. His wishes? Omg, he obviously hides such a stuff from those, who are not enough close to his soul.
You’ve said, that he lacks the concept of “self”.
Hell, no. As I said, he’s just extremely clueless, and extremely inconfident, and that’s the source of his pernament fail with people.
And then-about his wishes. It’s just that he places his own priority on the twenty-second place, and thus his own wishes are always on the same place.
He really WISHED to be with Athena, and he was pretty egoistic at that. To the point of abandoning his new Master. Don’t you forget about conclusion of the Athena Saga? It was she, who was talking about moral and financial aspects, not Hayate. He was willing to stay with her, no matter what, and then he told to himself(and to Hina(: ) that he was “dumped”, rather than it was external causes, that hasn’t let him to stay.
Look. HE THINKS ABOUT ATHENA’S WILL AND HIS OWN WISH, NOT ABOUT CAUSES, THAT FORCED HER TO “DUMP” HIM, despite his complete awareness of those causes. That’s the thing, he didn’t care. Egoistic? As fuck. Especially if you remember a certain nutcracker.

    • Mentar makes some rather good points and I agree wholeheartedly with many of them.

Hayate did not leave Athena because of what she said. Her words may have a certain extent of impact on Hayate, but that’s not the main reason. I perceive the main reason to be Nagi. Yes, Nagi. What about Nagi, though?
Before we look at that, we should consider what Nagi is to Hayate. Hayate constantly expressed the importance of Nagi in his life; Nagi saved him, Nagi gave him many opportunities in life. This lead to Hayate feeling indebted to Nagi. He felt that it was his obligation to stay with Nagi, he needed to repay her for the debt.

It is always possible that Hayate did want to be with Athena. However, why did he say “She (Nagi) is my life itself” in front of Athena? Why did he feel the need to tell her about how important Nagi was to him? Because to Hayate, obligation and duty far surpassed any personal desires. Should you tell him to do something, he’ll do everything he can to complete the task. He chose Nagi over Athena because of duty. He followed Alice’s commands and did what he did because of duty. He brought the wardrobe over to the Violet Mansion because of duty.

Basically, if you give Hayate an order (or if something is his duty), he becomes a mindless drone.

When not following orders, Hayate’s insensitivity may result from his initial interaction with girl; he was rather intimate with Athena, his first female friend. This interaction may have created some misunderstanding about male-female interactions. The fact that he hardly understands love (due to lack of experience) may have aided in the creation of this misunderstanding, since he did not understand the extent of their relationship (Hayate and Athena) which may have resulted in some mislink.

Just think about this for a second. What Hayate did during Hinagiku’s birthday… would he have done the same to Athena? I do think so.
