Hayate no Gotoku! Ch. 298

The show begins!

In the previous chapter we came to the knowledge that Luca was an idol, and that her concert was about to begin. This chapter, therefore, focused on her concert.

An overdose of Luca.

As such, there was so much Luca in this chapter. She was in different clothes and different poses, and there were three or four pages with nothing else but Luca. One thing becomes perfectly clear: This chapter was a Luca “show-off”, and the whole event looked more like a fashion show than a concert. Well, for a singer these are one in the same.

Judging by the big crowd of audience and the big advertisement outside the venue, it seemed that Luca was indeed a very famous singer, and yet Hayate did not know her. Well, perhaps what Hayate lacked was not delicacy, but common sense…

If Luca was indeed that popular, it might explain why she appeared in different disguises at the Doujinshi events. The fact that a popular singer was drawing doujinshis might destroy her image – Just imagine Robbie Williams being an Otaku. Even if she did not care herself, her manager and company did. The bottom-line might be that she could not enter Doujinshi Conventions in her true identity.

A.k.a. "the person who outshines me in this arc".

If that was true, then what I couldn’t get was Nagi’s reaction when she imagined Luca being her rival – It might just be me, but I sensed a feeling of inferiority in Nagi’s monologue. In their Doujinshi competition, I couldn’t see Luca trying to gain the upper hand by using her fame as an idol. Rather, she would enter the competition as “Fly Dolphin”, and in every sense she would be on equal grounds with Nagi. There was nothing for Nagi to think she was inferior, unless she thought she was inferior to Luca as a person.

Typical Hayate. All he cared about was a taxi.

Everybody, including Hayate, would imagine that a singer with Luca’s popularity would earn a lot of money, so she should have more than enough money to take a taxi. Well, we all know that he should compare her situation to himself, as he was a butler who was supposed to be earning good money, but he was always in a lack of it. The money Luca earned might simply be used solely to repay her debt. 150M yen was quite a big sum, even for a singer.

Speaking of Hayate, he was still in his maid dress, and was helping Luca with all the things at backstage, including helping her to “speed-change”. The act of “speed-change” was nothing new in itself, but rather an essential skill for all (female) singers. As Luca still thought Hayate was a girl, she found herself completely comfortable to undress and dress in front of him. Hayate, on the other hand, was not quite comfortable…

Welcome on board of the ship. Passengers should pray this is not the Titanic.

There was no doubt that Hayate had been very helpful. Luca felt a rush of gratitude towards him and gave him a kiss on his cheek. With that act Luca joined the long list of people who had directly kissed Hayate, which included Athena (lips), Izumi (lips), Nagi (cheek), Isumi (cheek) and Ayumu (cheek). With that, I began to think that perhaps it didn’t really mean anything, for if Hayate would fall for a girl who kissed him, then he would have fallen for a lot of girls already. Of course, we can never write off the chance that Hayate really would fall for Luca this time, so…

Luca said something quite interesting before kissing him, though. “It is great that you are such a nice girl.” It means that she was perfectly sure that Hayate was a girl when she kissed him. So… I don’t know, she didn’t have to be a lesbian to kiss a “girl”, but she still offered herself as a suspect.

Give it up, Hayate. To her you are a girl.

On the other hand, things might get more and more complicated for Hayate. He helped her changing her clothes with his eyes opened and received a kiss on the cheek from her, so it would be more and more embarrassing for him to reveal the truth that he was a boy.

Well, if the whole Hayate-Luca action was an one-off event, then it would be very easy for him to pretend that nothing happened, and both of them could carry on living a life without the other one. But the problem is that Luca was “destined” to meet Nagi, so she was also “destined” to meet Hayate again. So what would he do? Would he try to pretend that Maid Star and Ayasaki Hayate were two completely different people with absolutely no connection at all? Would he finally reveal to her, as a boy, that the “Maid Star” Luca met was in fact himself? These would remain to be answered in coming chapters.

What are the odds of him failing to recognize her?

More problems were coming for Hayate, though. Together with her new Getter Robo, Yozora – now in a mask – finally caught up with Hayate, and the first thing happened was that Hayate received a huge Getter Punch. Would that mean that Hayate and the robot were going to fight at the backstage? But then it would cause troubles for Luca’s concert, and Hayate – No, Maid Star – should do everything to stop that from happening. So, what would he do?

Let’s wait for the next chapter!

  1. You have to admit that she looks awesome.

And, naw, I don’t think she’s a lesbian. She probably figured out that Hayate is a guy a long time ago. Girls intuition, or whatever.

    We’ll see…

  2. Another kiss…
Just how many kisses has Hayate received anyway?^^”

It looks like Hayate’s harem has officially been expanded. And this development gives me the feeling that Luca will stand at the same position as A-tan’s in the Athena saga, topping all other girls.

    • Let’s see. Hayate received kisses from Nagi (cheek), Ayumu (cheek), Izumi (lips), Athena (lips), Isumi (cheek; though whether that was a kiss is debatable), and now Luca (cheek). Did I miss anyone out?

There is perhaps one thing worthy of a note. Hayate has almost always been on the receiving end of kisses. The only girl I remember him taking the initiative to kiss was Athena, and that was when they were 6 years old.

That is to say, I don’t really care who kissed Hayate, but whom Hayate would kiss. Though, of course, when we have the answer, the ship wars as well as the series must be coming to the end…

  3. A Hina kiss is missing, huh?

I’d like to see them kiss by accident. Yeah, I know it’s cliche and all, but whatever.

    It would still be awesome.

  4. Err… what?

I said that a Hina kiss is missing. Ayumu, Athena, Izumi, Nagi all already have kissed Hayate in one way or another, yet Hina isn’t even close.

We need to see that. Even if by accident.

I really don’t understand your reply.

    • I thought your “A Hina kiss is missing, huh?” was a reply to my question “Did I miss anyone out?”. It seemed that I misunderstood your sentence and therefore my reply did not make sense.

Let me offer a reply to you again. Emm… of course I would like to see Hayate kissing Hina, perhaps at the end of the series, but if we talk about a “missing kiss”, then I think Maria would fall into this category too, since I don’t really remember Maria kissing Hayate (or vice versa).

So when we beg for a Hayate-Hina kiss we must expect people to beg for a Hayate-Maria kiss as well, which to me is not… preferable.

  5. I wonder why hasn’t Hata done so already. I mean, Hina is one of the most, if not already the most popular character of HnG.

Why is she so left out of the loop?

Perhaps being left out leaves a glimmer of hope? You know… not being like Ayumu. Indefinitely “on hold”.

    • Well, perhaps Hata thinks that Hina could do better than an accidental kiss and no follow-up, and really has something special reserved for her! 😉

Honestly if I see no hope at all then I might have abandoned this series a long time ago. It isn’t really that fun to have all these cliff-hanging feelings.

I read manga for fun, not for suffering, after all.

  6. Hina had an indirect kiss, that was all.

Haven’t checked the spoilers, but I expect some pretty interesting development, from what I read in the comments.

Hayate received most of those kisses on rather strange occassions. Nagi and the bathroom incident, Izumi etc.

    • Haha, at least Ayumu kissed him good time, good place. The setting sun and the beach, I ask you. 😉

    • Don’t you think that the indirect kiss was quite insignificant when compared to all those direct kisses?

Hayate did not know what he has done after he “kissed” Hina, so to say the least. 😉

  7. Yeah, it was pretty insignificant, and Hayate didn’t even consider it and probably never will.

And I enjoy both the sad and the happy parts of the manga. Although if I had to side, I’d side with the sad, dramatic part. I like all the emotional involvement in it…

    The possible loss…

‘Sides, all good love stories have a tragic ending.

  8. I hope at chapter 300 like you said,is when the results are announced right?0.o Hope if hina get’s 1st place again she might have chapter 300 as a special chapter for her T.T

    • Ah well, that’s gonna irritate her haters.

I imagine it would be like Ch. 110, in which every one at Top 10 has a few panels and some gags and fan-services.

    • Damn, why did they have to release the raws while I was drinking whisky?

I was literally drunk when I was doing this Review article, you see.

  9. Hmm… Luca a lesbian? Naw, I believe she kissed her (him of course) only as form of deep gratitude. She was really thankful for what he did for her. She can’t repay her back in any other way, since apparently she doesn’t earn that much money, or she invests most of it to repay her debt…

I do hope I’m right. Although there might be a possible match for her out there. I dunno. The only confirmed lesbian (of sorts) is Miki.

    • Well, as I said, Luca offered herself as a suspect. At this point even I cannot be sure she was indeed a lesbian.

      We need more proof.

  10. Hmmm…I’m not liking Luca very much at this point. Hata’s trying to hard to make her popular and she just resembles Fumi in my opinion, not just in appearance…

This isn’t gonna work out as well as it did with Athena…

    • I think Hata might be pressing too hard to “hard-sell” Luca. I think Luca was fine in herself, but I hate the idea that I am being forced to accept her, or even to love her…

    • Not entirely sure what you are talking about. 😛
